  • If a personal statement and community letter of support has already been sent to our office for the Indigenous Scholars Award, you are not required to submit an additional statement/letter.

  • Please ensure you submit a personal statement and community letter of support as instructed at the bottom of this page. These steps must be completed in order to be considered for the UBC Okanagan Indigenous Graduate Fellowship.

    • Text must be single-spaced, with no more than six lines per inch.• Pages must be 8 ½" x 11" (216mm x 279mm);
    • All text should be black, and no colour images should be used;
    • The acceptable font is Times New Roman (regular, minimum 12-pt.) or any comparable serif font.
    • Condensed type is not acceptable.
    • Set margins at a minimum of 2 cm (3/4 of an inch) all around.
    • Include your name and UBC student number in the page header (on every page).
    • For multipage attachments, number the pages sequentially.
    • Pages in excess of the number permitted will be removed.
    • If you have supporting documents written in a language other than English or French, you must provide a translation of the document in English or French.
    • Any extraneous materials (materials not requested in the instructions below) will be removed if submitted.

  • Personal Statement

  • If you have not submitted an application to the Indigenous Scholars Award, please complete the Personal Statement form.

    The personal statement is a written essay up to 500 words and should be constructed as a narrative or story in your own words. It should include:

    • Your background and history, including your family, clan, Nation, community name, membership, etc.
    • Your involvement with and contribution to Indigenous community (Note: Besides your home community, “community” can also be an organization, a program, or a different community to your own).
    • Any other information that you think would be relevant for review.
  • Community Letter of Support

  • If you have not submitted an application to the Indigenous Scholars Award, please complete the Community Support Letter form. Applications must also include a letter written by a representative of a community organization (band office, Métis organization, Friendship House, etc.) who can verify and support your Personal Statement. This letter should include:

    • An introduction of the community supporter including their own background and history, such as their family, clan, Nation, community name, membership, etc.
    • Their relationship to the applicant.
    • Verification and details of the applicant’s involvement with and contribution to Indigenous community as written in their Personal Statement.
    • Any other information the community supporter would like the reviewers to be aware of.
    • Letters must be on letterhead with contact information (name, phone number, email).
      • If letterhead cannot be provided, the referee may be contacted for verification.
